Stations & Facilities

The Kuwait National Railway Project (KNRR) includes the development of a modern station and support facilities designed to ensure efficient operation, passenger comfort, and streamlined freight handling. This section provides an overview of the design concepts and site planning for key infrastructure components.

Kuwait City Station​

  • Planned as the central terminal for the national railway network, located in a strategic urban zone within Kuwait City.

  • Designed to accommodate intercity, regional, and GCC passenger service

​​

  •  Includes:

    • High-capacity platforms for long-distance trains

    • Passenger ticketing & information halls

    • Retail, dining, and service amenities

    • Integrated pick-up/drop-off zones

​​

  • Functions as a mobility hub, supporting:

    • Seamless first and last-mile access

    • Urban regeneration and commercial development in its vicinity

  • Ensures barrier-free access, climate-resilient design, and alignment with GCC passenger handling standards

Freight Yard

  • Planned as a central logistics hub within the national railway system, strategically located for freight handling and distribution

  • Designed to international freight operations, aligned with GCC corridor standards

 

  • Key facilities and functions include:

    • Reception and dispatch tracks for full-length freight trains (up to 2,000 m)

    • Intermodal container terminals for transfer between rail and road

    • Warehousing and bulk handling zones

    • Customs clearance and security screening areas

    • Shunting yards and locomotive servicing areas

Operational Control Center (OCC) 

Centralized command hub for train control, emergency response, and network monitoring

  • The nerve center of the KNRR railway system, responsible for network-wide command, control, and coordination

​​

  • Centralized facility for real-time monitoring and supervision of:

    • Train movements (passenger & freight)

    • Signaling and interlocking systems (ERTMS Level 2 or higher)

    • Emergency response coordination

    • Maintenance and system diagnostics

​​

  • Ensures:

    • Safety, punctuality, and service quality

    • Rapid response to operational irregularities

    • Compliance with GCC and international railway operational protocols
