About the KNRR Project

The Kuwait National Railway Network (KNRR) project is a key initiative aimed at strengthening Kuwait's transportation infrastructure and enhancing integration with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The project envisions the construction of a 575 km main railway network, designed to support both passenger and freight transportation.

Project Summary:

  • Total Length of Planned Railway Network in Kuwait: 575 km main line

  • Planned Railway Operation: Mixed Traffic (Both Passenger and Freight)

  • Passenger Train Speed: 200 km/h

  • Freight Train Speed: 120 km/h

 

Kuwait’s Main Line Railways are Categorized as Follows:

  • GCC Component: 111 km

  • Boubyan Port Component: 154 km

  • Iraq Connection Component: 53 km

  • Future Lines: 257 km (These lines include connections to Shuwaik Port, Shuaiba Port, Abdaly, and Salmi.)

 

This Project Covers the 111 km GCC Component of the Network.

Structures and Facilities Included in the Project:

  • Passenger Station

  • Passenger Train Processing Facility

  • Freight Yard

  • Operational Control Center

  • Rolling Stock Maintenance Workshop

  • Infrastructure Maintenance Depot

  • Border Siding

 

Technological Systems:

  • Signaling System: European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2

  • Telecommunication System: Fiber Optic Infrastructure, GSM-R

 

Current Status:
The feasibility study for the project has been completed, and it is currently in the design phase. This critical project aims to enhance regional connectivity and improve transportation infrastructure in Kuwait, and will play a vital role in strengthening links between GCC countries. Once construction begins, the modernization of Kuwait's railway infrastructure will be realized, and the project will further contribute to regional trade and passenger transport with future line connections.
